Jokes For Votes – Integrity of “The Onion” Under Scrutiny After Sale to Univision

February 19, 2016 – Satirical outlet “The Onion” has been a source of no-holds-barred comedy for 28 years, but its political bias is now coming into question after its sale to Univision in January. The Onion Inc. which also controls A.V. Club, Clickhole, StarWipe, and Onion Studios, sold a 40% interest to the Spanish language media company, but that’s not where the story ends. Univision is co-owned by one of Hillary Clinton’s biggest fans and top campaign donor, mogul Haim Saban – that correlation has stopped the laughter for some.

Although The Onion has refused to comment on whether Saban’s ownership will influence its editorial policy, TheIntercept.com has this to say:

“But what’s gotten no attention at all is that Haim Saban, Hillary Clinton’s biggest fan and financial supporter, is Univision’s co-owner and chairman. Saban and his wife, Cheryl, are Hillary Clinton’s top financial backers, having given $2,046,600 to support her political campaigns and at least $10 million more to the Clinton Foundation, on whose board Cheryl Saban sits. The Sabans are also generous supporters of the overall Democratic Party infrastructure, donating, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, a total of $16.1 million since 1989 to Democratic and liberal candidates, party committees, leadership PACs, and federally focused 527s.”

Many are pointing to this decidedly humorless article which appeared in The Onion this week as proof of change.

Per TheFreeThoughtProject.com:

“…an apparent attempt at satirical understatement in actuality proved to be nothing less than a blatant propagandistic fluff piece touting Clinton’s ostensibly stellar career.”
